EFF disrupts National Assembly proceedings again

2014-11-06 16:11

Another EFF MP has been suspended from the National Assembly after refusing to obey speaker Baleka Mbete’s calls for him to leave the house.

A defiant Andile Mngxitama had just read out a motion without notice on the Farlam Commission of Inquiry into the August 2012 shootings at Marikana, North West. Mbete informed the party that the motion had not been agreed to prior to the sitting.

This prompted Mngxitama to object.

Mbete repeatedly told Mngxitama to take his seat. When he refused, she told him to “leave the house”.

“I am not going to keep telling you to take your seat and you continue to speak,” a clearly frustrated Mbete told him.

Mbete ignored continued requests from Mngxitama’s colleagues to address her on the issue.

“Characters like Honourable Mngxitama who behave like they are a law unto themselves will have to be persuaded to leave the house so the house can then proceed,” said Mbete.

She ordered the sergeant at arms, Regina Mohlomi, to help her remove Mngxitama from the house. Mngxitama stayed put, defying both Mbete and Mohlomi.

At one stage, an EFF MP was heard shouting “call the police”.

“I will not call the police. Honourable Mngxitama will have to obey the rules of the house,” said Mbete.

When it became clear Mngxitama was not willing to budge, the speaker declared: “In view of your continued defiance, I now suspend you for five days.”

Unlike on August 21, when Mbete suspended proceedings when EFF MPs refused to obey her orders to leave the house for disrupting President Jacob Zuma’s question time, she allowed today’s sitting to continue.

The 20 MPs involved in the August incident face suspension after they were found guilty on contempt of Parliament charges.
