EFF postpones Marikana launch pending registration

2013-08-22 17:27

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has postponed indefinitely its long-awaited launch scheduled for this Saturday in Marikana.

Advocate Dali Mpofu, who was programme director at the Marikana commemoration services on Friday, told the crowd Julius Malema would return there this coming Saturday to launch the nascent party.

But EFF co-founder Floyd Shivambu told City Press today the launch had been postponed indefinitely.

“The EFF launch in Marikana has been postponed until further notice. We took a decision that we should suspend all the launches and wait until the party is officially registered with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) before we can start with its official launches.

“Procedurally we must wait for 30 days to see if there are people opposing the party to register as a political organisation, and once that process is completed we will then announce the date. But we will continue with other activities and programmes,” he said.

The Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) has written to the IEC to oppose the registration of EFF as a political party.

It argues that the party propagates the expropriation of land without compensation, nationalisation of mines and banks, particularly on a racial basis.
