EU lifts sanctions on Libyan ports, airline, banks, energy sector

2011-09-02 08:58

Ports, energy companies, banks and the national airline are among the 28 Libyan entities which have had their European Union sanctions lifted, the bloc announced today.

The partial lifting of EU sanctions was announced yesterday, but the list of companies that would benefit from the decision was only made public a day later in the bloc’s official journal.

Sanctions were taken off the country’s Economic and Social Development Fund, the National Commercial Bank, Gumhouria Bank, Sahara Bank, First Gulf Libyan Bank, one British-registered company, Tekxel, and the Jawaby Property Investment fund.

The oil and gas company in Ras Lanuf, oil refineries and terminals in Brega, Sirte, Mabruk and national outfits such as the Oil Libya Holding Company, which controls the Tamoil group, have also seen their assets unblocked.

Finally, the EU has lifted restrictions on Libyan Arab Airlines as well as on port authorities in Tripoli, al Khoms, Brega and Ras Lanuf.
