Sapa’s building in Greenside, Johannesburg, shook and pictures and computers rattled during the extended tremor.

Sapa’s reporter in Durban said the tremor was felt there too and people went out to the streets. Durban Bay House, one of the tallest buildings in the city, was evacuated.

People immediately took to social media to report it.

“Who else just felt the earthquake. That was a crazy ... tremor,” said Johannesburg resident Adrian Patrick on Facebook.

“Here in Durban too,” responded Byron David.

Citizens from Johannesburg to KwaZulu-Natal, North West, and Cape Town reported feeling the tremor.

People tweeted about buildings being evacuated in Johannesburg, Umhlanga and other cities.

The US Geological Survey said the 5.3 magnitude earthquake was centred in Orkney, 120km southwest of Johannesburg, Reuters reported.

Orkney is an area with a high concentration of gold mines.

When approached for comment, the Council for Geoscience was still compiling data on where the tremor had been felt. It seemed most parts of the country including Gauteng, Western Cape, Free State and the North West had been affected.

It was expected to release a statement later today, Zinhle Mapumulo reported.
