East Rand power outage affects water supply

2014-06-07 17:01

A power outage caused by the vandalism of an Eskom tower has affected the water supply in some parts of Springs, east of Joburg, the Ekurhuleni municipality has said.

“The water supply process requires electricity to pump water from the reservoir,” said spokesperson Themba Radebe today.

The areas affected by the water shortage were Selection Park, Geduld, Dal Fouche, Pollak Park and Wright Park.

The municipality had dispatched roving water tankers in the affected areas, said Radebe.

“Meanwhile efforts are being intensified to restore the power supply in the area.”

The 132kV Eskom tower was vandalised yesterday.

“Several areas were left without the power supply after theft of the tower steel elements resulting in the collapse of the Eskom tower,” Radebe said.

He said engineers worked until late yesterday to restore power but had to stop for safety reasons.

Engineers began repairing a vandalised Eskom tower this morning.

Power was estimated to be restored by midnight.
