Eastern Cape ‘excluded’ from Malema’s leadership

2011-06-15 13:07

For the first time since political parties were unbanned in 1990, the proposed new leadership of the ANC Youth League does not include a delegate from the Eastern Cape, a traditional stronghold for ANC supporters.

Julius Malema, whose first term as president will end this week, has released the names of his leadership team should he be re-elected on Saturday, as is widely anticipated.

In addition to himself, Malema has named Ronald Lamola, from Mpumalanga, as his preferred deputy president. Sindiswa Magaqa, who has been nominated for the position of secretary general, comes from KwaZulu-Natal.

Pule Mabe, the incumbent treasurer-general who has been nominated to keep his post, is from Limpopo, as is Malema.

Kenetswe Mosinekgwe, who is from North West, has been nominated for the position of deputy secretary-general.

In recent weeks, the Eastern Cape provincial counsel expressed their support for Malema being returned for a second term, but on condition that Ayanda Matiti, the chairman of Eastern Cape, as secretary-general.

Last Saturday, Malema told the provincial delegates his wish list was final and that Matiti would not be included in the line-up.

Mosinekgwe is also the only woman on the Malema slate, something which appears to have angered the Commission on Gender Equality.

However, Malema’s outgoing team was also male-heavy with only one female, Vuyiswa Tulelo, the secretary-general.
