Eastern Cape nurse arrested for running illegal clinic

2011-07-23 13:24

A nurse was arrested for allegedly running an illegal clinic in Coffee Bay in the Eastern Cape, the provincial health department said today.

Spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the 59-year-old woman was arrested yesterday and found in possession of “everything used to run a hospital”.

He said the nurse had state medicine, oxygen tanks, stethoscopes and even fluids used for drips.

She had traditional medicines as well as medicines only given on prescription.

Kupelo said the department was investigating if she had a dispensing licence.

The nurse apparently treated patients at her house, charging them R120 per consultation and then admitting some for observation.

According to Kupelo, this is the fourth nurse arrested in the past two months for running an illegal clinic in the Eastern Cape region.

He said the department was losing R1 million a year through medicine theft at hospitals and clinics.

The nurse would appear in the Mqanduli Magistrates Court on Monday.
