Eastern Province Rugby Union fined R15 000

2011-03-11 14:34

The Eastern Province Rugby Union (EPRU) had received a R15 000 fine for fielding ineligible players in two Vodacom Cup games and two friendly matches, the South African Rugby Union (Saru) said today.

The union was found guilty of breaching Regulation 4.2 of the Player Status, Player Contracts and Player Movement Regulations for allowing hooker Hannes Franklin and scrum-half Jacques Coetzee to play in four matches earlier this year without the necessary clearance certificates.

The EPRU was fined in respect of the two friendly games against the Bulls (R5 000) and the Cheetahs (R10 000), and would forfeit all log points accumulated from the Vodacom Cup games against the Welwitschias and the Leopards.

The complaint that the EPRU transgressed regulations was made by the Mpumalanga Rugby Union.

The EPRU has the right to appeal against the findings and the penalties imposed.
