Ebola: SA issues travel ban

2014-08-21 16:21

Cabinet has issued a travel ban for non-South Africans from countries that have cases of Ebola, says Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi.

Motsoaledi today said South Africans coming from such West African countries would be questioned, and medically examined if need be.

Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe earlier said the Ebola outbreak in West Africa had featured high on the agenda of Cabinet’s regular fortnightly meeting, which was held yesterday.

“Cabinet had a thorough briefing yesterday and took certain decisions that will affect South Africans who travel to those countries that are affected by Ebola,” said Radebe.

On Monday, a South African man admitted to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital for suspected Ebola tested negative.

The 37-year-old man had worked as a health and safety officer in a mining operation in Liberia.
