Education MEC discloses results of school-pregnancy survey in province

2011-08-16 14:29

Close to 1 500 schoolgoing girls fell pregnant in Mpumalanga this year.

Speaking in the provincial legislature, education MEC Reginah Mhaule said the department’s survey found – during the first quarter of this year – that a total 1 478 girls were pregnant.

Mhaule said that last year 1 039 girls fell pregnant and most of them were from the Gert Sibande region.

She said surveys were generally conducted in the first quarter every year.

“This report displays an increase in pregnancies, except Gert Sibande, where we intervened this year as they had a high rate in 2010,” she added.

“We conducted learner pregnancy seminars through our life-skills units and spread messages through radio talk shows.

“I must admit we should now focus in all regions of the province and engage community structures as the department alone can’t curb this problem,” Mhaule said.

Mhaule said five schools had the highest number of pregnant girls this year and among them had 117 pregnant girls.
