Education department disgusted by boozing pupils

2011-01-14 07:08

The Gauteng education department was “disgusted” by a picture taken of school children drinking alcohol in public.

“The behaviour of these learners is an absolute disgrace, not only to themselves but their families, the school and the education system as a whole,” said department spokesperson Charles Phahlane.

“The learners have been identified and their parents have been called to the school to address this behaviour.”

The Sowetan reported that some pupils on the West Rand were spotted drinking cider on their way to the first day of school in Gauteng on Wednesday.

Phahlane said the schools involved would be taking disciplinary action against the pupils.

The department has requested the police to investigate possible charges of public drinking.

“The Gauteng education department will not tolerate such behaviour and will not hesitate to take stern action,” he said.

The SA Democratic Teachers’ Union yesterday said liquor outlets must stop selling alcohol to underage children.

The union suggested a government ban on liquor advertising, as was the case with cigarette advertising.
