Eight arrested in drug raids

Eight people were arrested for possession of mandrax and cocaine worth about R13 million confiscated in two separate drug busts in Johannesburg today, police said.

Mandrax and manufacturing paraphernalia worth R11 million were found in a house in Parkmore on Friday, spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

A man and a woman were arrested at the house around 8am, after a month-long operation by the Hawks.

“All the chemicals and equipment, as well as the end product of Mandrax, worth about R11 million were found.”

Three stolen vehicles with Botswana licence plates were confiscated. No money was found at the scene. The couple, both in their 30s, were expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Monday on charges of manufacturing and dealing in drugs.

Earlier on Friday morning, cocaine with a street value of R2 million was seized and six people arrested in Ridgeway, south of Johannesburg.

Dlamini said the Hawks and members of the dog unit arrested five Nigerian men and one South African woman at an upmarket townhouse complex around 6am.

“Police acting on information raided the complex and found 3kg of cocaine powder hidden in the bathroom.”

It was believed the complex was being used as a distribution point, and the drug was manufactured elsewhere.

“Further investigation may lead police to a drug laboratory which is believed to be in the southern suburbs of Johannesburg.”

Police also confiscated vehicle registration documents and passports believed to be fake.

The six, all in their 30s, were expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of dealing in drugs.

“More people may be arrested as investigations are continuing.”

Dlamini said the two incidents were unrelated.
