A hospital in the north of the country says eight people have died in violent anti-government demonstrations.

Mzuzu Central Hospital said in a statement today that many were also wounded in yesterday’s protests in the third-largest city.

Unrest continued today in the commercial centre of Blantyre and in the capital, Lilongwe, with heavy military and police presence.

Malawians are protesting persistent fuel and foreign exchange reserve shortages and bad governance.

A nurse at the hospital says victims were shot with live ammunition.

She asked for anonymity because she was not permitted to speak to the press.

Police say they fired tear gas at protesters who began looting shops and buildings in the capital.

President Bingu wa Mutharika is scheduled to address the nation later today.
