Ekurhuleni ready for strike

Contingency plans are in place to ensure service delivery is not disrupted if Samwu-affiliated workers go on strike in Ekurhuleni, the municipality said today.

“As council we have it on good authority that some workers who are members of SA Municipal Workers’ Union plan to embark on a strike in solidarity with the seven shop stewards who were charged for disrupting a council meeting in March last year,” spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said.

“As a municipality it is our responsibility to ensure that people’s lives are not disorganised and inconvenienced by service delivery interruptions, hence we have put plans in place to ensure that this does not happen.”

He said the strike, which was said to take place on Friday, would be an illegal one.

The “no work no pay” rule would apply.

The disciplinary action against the seven shop stewards, including some leaders of the union in the region, started in June last year.

They face charges of gross misconduct, insubordination and bringing the council into disrepute.

They allegedly barged into the council chamber on March 25 last year as then executive mayor Ntombi Mekgwe was about to deliver the mayoral monthly council speech, Dlamini said.

“We reiterate our philosophy of promoting sound and harmonious relationship with organised labour. This principle will be adhered to, to the end,” he said.

The disciplinary process had been postponed several times, but would resume tomorrow.
