They campaigned hard, they voted quickly and now the politicians and party leaders will be anxiously awaiting the results of what many describe as the first issue-driven local government election.

President Jacob Zuma, voted in Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal: “We want water, electricity and proper roads in this area. We want electricity to cover everybody.”

Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille cast her vote at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Rondebosch, Cape Town: “We don’t go into divisive racial categories. We are the most non-racial party.”

ANC stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela warned after voting at the Orlando West High School in Soweto: “I think that this is our greatest test for our future election in three years. It is a great challenge to the ANC. The people are calling on us to deliver. They think that it’s time deliver. They think it’s time to stop blaming the past for the ills of our society.”

ANC Youth League president Julius Malema voted with his granny at his home town of Seshego outside Polokwane in Limpopo: “If you do not vote you have no reason to complain. Even when you complain and say to people ‘we voted for you’ your conscience will be speaking to you that you did not vote and therefore you have no strength to even want to argue with the elected ward candidate.”

After voting at the Oranje Meisies School in Bloemfontein, Cope president Mosiuoa Lekota said: “We will surprise many.”

The battle for Cape Town saw DA mayor candidate Patricia de Lille say: “I’ve put in my best, today it’s time for the voters to speak. The future of the city is in their hands. I hope they make the right choice.”

ANC mayoral candidate Tony Ehrenreich said: “We want to build a united Cape Town, rich and poor, black and white.”
