A trio of Soweto photographers has been touring the country taking portraits of rising young creatives. Charl Blignaut reports

I See A Different You is going places. What started off as a classically elegant fashion blog played out on the streets of Soweto has turned into a national exhibition with a corporate sponsor.

Grant’s Whisky has backed photographers VuyoMpantsha, Innocent Mukheli and Justice Mukheli to select their favourite emerging cultural stars and shoot their portraits.

Subjects range from kick-ass skhothane trendsetters Explosive Tarianas; to Inga Gubeka, who handcrafts home accessories for his company, Indalo Décor; to skater crew Skate Society Soweto; to comedians Goliath and Goliath.

There’s public art fundis The Trinity Session, the WKND Social party organisers, fashion designers like Laduma of MaXhosa, cutting edge ceramics stars, rap crews, fashion bloggers, and all manner of hip young things.

True to form, they are captured in epic, panoramic photos that bring gravity to their work.

They might just be starting out, but through the lenses of I See A Different You, the creatives look like seasoned masters at the top of their game.

The exhibition has reached Cape Town, where it’s hanging at the 6 Spin Street Restaurant and Gallery.
