End the rot now

The signs are there. The ANC today stands for Arrogance, Nepotism and Corruption

The column by Malegapuru Makgoba, “This is not the year to vote out the ANC” (City Press, January 19), refers.

No one doubts the many positive changes the ANC has brought about since coming into power. But the ANC of today is not the ANC of 1994, however much of those within the party claim otherwise.

The ANC today stands for Arrogance, Nepotism and Corruption. Its “leaders” are dragging the country down a slippery slope.

It’s a pity that Professor Makgoba did not extend his trip and cross the border into Zimbabwe. There he would have seen the future South Africa, if we do not vote out the ANC: a Zimbabwe with no return to the promise and dreams of 1994.

The signs are there: corrupt “deployed” cadres; total lack of accountability of those in public office; state resources increasingly being used to defend those in power from public scrutiny (while selectively “neutralising” those who oppose them); more and more of the media in the hands of Zuma sympathisers; military veterans waiting in the wings; an electoral commission whose impartiality is being questioned; and so on.

The ANC of today is riddled with the cancer of corruption, and that cancer is spreading. There is no cure for cancer. Unlike the “terminal illnesses” of Schabir Shaik and Jackie Selebi, radical and urgent surgery is required.

The ANC has repeatedly shown that it is not capable. It is we who need to apply the knife by not selling out for a free lunch, T-shirts and meaningless promises.

No more yellow cards. It’s a red card and off you go!

We need change, and we need it now. We have one last opportunity to prevent our future – and that of our children – from being hijacked.

Yes we can, yes we must, for the government we want and deserve: of the people, by the people, for the people.
