Enticing 2011/12

2011-12-23 14:44

Despite the start-stop in the first half of the 2011/12 season, the margin of points between positions indicate that it has been exciting.

There is only one and two points difference between positions, with the margin between 11th and 12th-placed being the biggest at five points.

The international Fifa breaks, periods between Cup competitions and the league schedule have had a negative impact on some clubs.

And while the two month-break during the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations will come as a relief to some, others worry they might lose rhythm.

Apart from Free State Stars’ surprise showing – currently sixth on the log, the first half has panned out the way it was anticipated.

The usual suspects Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs occupy the first three positions going into the final stretch, while the bottom looks exactly as it was predicted with Jomo Cosmos and Black Leopards the likely relegation candidates.

The Brazilians handed their followers a perfect Christmas present by finishing top of the table. Despite losing three matches on the trot, Matsatsantsa a Pitori are still second on the log.

At the other end of the table, Cosmos and Leopards look likely to make a quick return to where they come from, the National First Division.

Just one win in 15 matches tells a sorry story for Cosmos. And with only a point separating them, Leopards are also in danger of losing their Premiership status.

At least three coaches have been fired so far this season. KwaZulu-Natal clubs AmaZulu and Golden Arrows were the first to pull the trigger, showing Manqoba Mngqithi and German Ernst Middendorp the door.

Boebie Solomons’ future at Santos is uncertain after he was put on two-match leave, with Duncan Crowie being tasked with guiding the side.

Goal-scoring has been a nightmare. Last season’s top scorer Katlego Mphela leads the pack with only nine goals. He is followed by veteran striker Siyabonga Nomvethe with eight.

Action resumes on February 15 with a full list.
