Environmental Affairs encourages youth to help in preserving oceans

2010-07-09 13:16

Dear Young South Africans.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all the best in enjoyment for the 2010 Fifa World Cup!

Each of us relies on a healthy ocean with a rich diversity of life to provide most of the oxygen we breathe, much of the food we eat, as well as medicines and other essentials that we need to survive. The greater the diversity of life in the ocean, the better job the ocean can do in helping maintain the planet’s normal climate conditions. In the same way, we also rely on our coast to provide us with many resources, places to live and a variety of recreational and commercial uses that make the coast one of the most valuable components of our country.

The Department of Environmental Affairs is proud to join hundreds of other educational institutions, conservation organisations, and thousands of indivi-duals in dozens of countries around the world to celebrate our shared ocean.

World Oceans Day – held on 8 June each year – is an opportunity to celebrate our world ocean and our personal connection to the sea. What kind of ocean do you want to leave for your children and grandchildren? By modifying simple things we do every day, we can positively impact the future of our world’s oceans.

We can all help motivate people to take conservation action, together as a nation. We can help make others more aware of the importance of the world’s ocean in their daily lives by showing them ways to improve their impact on the ocean by, for example, reducing CO2 emissions.

In joining with thousands of people all over the world in celebrating World Oceans Day, we can make a real difference for our ¬oceans of life.
“Seas” the day!

Ms Buyelwa Sonjica is the Minister of the Department of Water and Environmental Affairs.
