Soul singer Erykah Badu has been announced as the headlining act for the next year’s edition of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

Lauded as Africa’s grandest gathering, the jazz shindig is also the nation’s largest live music festival. It is scheduled to take place on March 28 and March 29 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).

Rashid Lombard, the CEO of the festival’s organising company, espAfrika, said today: “We’ve listened to our fans and we think we’ve got an even more exciting and crowd-pleasing festival.”

Others on the line-up include Miles Davis alumni and grand saxophonist Kenny Garrett (US) and his quintet – Chris Dave and the Drumhedz (US) – Haitus Kaiyote (Australia), Ambrose Akinmusire Quintet (US), the Foreign Exchange (US), Rakesh Chaurasia & Friends (India), Snarky Puppy (US), Jaco Maria (Mozambique) and Carmen Lundy (US).

Local jazz luminaries on the line-up include Dr Philip Tabane and Malombo, led by guitar wizard Tabane, as they make their first appearance on stage since 2009.

Another jazz elder and struggle stalwart Jonas Gwangwa, who last performed in 2003, will bring his trombone to the gig.

Completing the preliminary list of locals are The Soil, Jimmy Nevis, Reason, The Muffinz, Ological Studies and Soul Housing Project.
