Eskom warns of tight power supply, staff retrenchments

2014-11-27 11:30

Power supply tomorrow and the weekend was expected to be constrained, Eskom said today.

“We are concerned about tomorrow and into the weekend ... we must warn of a possible shortfall, but we will provide updates to the public,” spokesperson Andrew Etzinger said.

Although the system was under strain, no load shedding was planned for today, he said.

Areas currently experiencing power cuts would be due to faults at a local level and not due to Eskom’s generating capacity.

Eskom’s woes continue with a dismal performance on the financial side. This week, the utility released its financial report. Although the power utility made a profit of R9.3 billion in the first six months of the financial year, it was down by 24% when compared with the same period last year.

Eskom says voluntary retrenchment packages will be considered in February next year on a case-by-case basis.

But the power giant said operational requirements would be considered to ensure core skills are not lost.
