Eskom’s Medupi plant switches on in December – Lynne Brown

2014-07-16 19:55

The Medupi power plant will come online at the end of the year, despite another strike having affected construction.

“The synchronisation to the system of Medupi’s first unit will be concluded by December 2014 and subsequent units are scheduled to come on-stream at nine-monthly intervals thereafter,” Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown said today.

The completion of Medupi’s first unit has been delayed by over two years as a result of a number of problems, including industrial action.

The latest strike, by the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa), has entered its third week. Construction companies were reporting stayaways by employees.

Brown said the government was taking electricity supply seriously.

“I want to assure the two people who called me about their problems related to the affordability and reliability of their electricity supply and all other citizens and businesses that this issue is being addressed very seriously and very urgently,” she said.

“There are critical talks happening between ministries and departments and others to address this issue, not as an Eskom problem, but as a national priority.”

Other Eskom projects to increase electricity supply were on track, she said.

“All three units of Ingula pumped-storage plant are scheduled to be available by the end of 2015.

“Eskom has committed to contract at least 3725 MW of renewable energy in the year ahead,” said Brown.
