Every person must remember the contribution former president Nelson Mandela has made to the country, Minister in the Presidency Trevor Manuel has said.

“I think that is what is important to remember,” he said today in Johannesburg.

“We must carry forward his legacy ... Everyone has to be a Nelson Mandela.”

Whatever Madiba had worked to achieve, including democracy, was a success.

Manuel said Mandela’s physical presence was only one part of it.

“We ... understand that his physical presence is only one part of it ... his spiritual presence (must) live on,” he said.

Earlier, Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said South Africans should celebrate Mandela’s life as one well lived, even as they pray for the ailing statesman.

“The events around us dictate that we pass our salutations to the leader of our people, the father of the nation, a great thinker, unifying force, Nelson Mandela,” said Mbalula.

“Ours is the past to inherit and the future we seek to create, and, in that future we seek to create, we walk in the footsteps of great leaders and giants of our revolution that have come before us.

“It is therefore befitting for all of us at this hour of darkness to think and pray for Nelson Mandela, but to celebrate a life well lived, and that is why we say long live Nelson Mandela.”

Mbalula was speaking at the launch of the fourth World Conference on Doping in Sport in Sandton.

The elderly statesman (94) is in a critical condition in a Pretoria hospital, where he was admitted with a recurring lung infection on June 8.
