Ex-mayor’s case postponed

2011-06-20 14:00

The racketeering trial of former Mangaung mayor Pappie Mokoena and 18 others was postponed today after some of the accused indicated they wanted to bring an application for acquittal.

Presiding Judge A Kruger postponed the matter to Wednesday after the defence counsel of two Heidedal businessmen, Keabecoe and Kegomodicoe Lekone, indicated that such an application would be filed on Wednesday.

The defence counsel for three more accused, former political advisor Jakes Thithi, Evodia Kok and Laetitia Hoffman (Mokoena’s former personal assistant), was also considering various options in this regard.

Kruger would hear the applications on Wednesday.

Mokoena and the co-accused face a total of 259 charges, including theft and money laundering involving an estimated R130 million.

Not all the accused face all the charges.

The case followed an investigation by the now-disbanded Scorpions into the Mangaung Local Municipality.

The accused include former municipal manager Mojalefa Matlole, former municipal speaker Zongezile Zumane, former business manager Mzwandile Silwana, and Thithi, a political advisor to the former major.

The other accused are Silwana’s wife Brigitte, Kok (Zumane’s personal assistant), Hoffman, Buyelwa Khethelo, a businesswoman from Rocklands, Soweto, and the Lekones.
