Ex-official faces R5m theft charge

2012-03-09 07:16

Notable public figure Thabang Mamonyane has appeared in court for allegedly stealing R5 million through a cash-in-transit van scam.

Mamonyane is accused of using a converted cash-in-transit van to collect R5 million from various businesses, the Sowetan reported.

He is a former Mogale City official, former spokesperson for then Gauteng premier Tokyo Sexwale, a former Talk Radio 702 employee and the ex-husband of Johannesburg Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane.

It was understood that he and two others pretended to be cash collectors and took money from a number of companies. The businesses only became aware of the scam after the real cash-transit guards arrived later to pick up the money.

Mamonyane allegedly did this 22 times since 2010. He was arrested after police traced the vehicle used in the heists.

He appeared in court yesterday and was remanded in custody until his bail application on March 15.
