Experience art and ­cultural hotspots

Celebrate Durban, now in its eighth year, is under way in the city and surrounds.

This festival of theatre, music, food and fun incorporates all sorts of events – more than 40 in all – that celebrate Heritage and Tourism month as the holiday season rapidly approaches.

Here are a few of the cultural events happening in the city this weekend.

» Flavours of Durban
Today (Sept 5) is the last day of the yearly Flavours of Durban at the Durban Exhibition Centre.

Entrance is free and an array of chefs and food lovers from Durban’s sister cities are showcasing their signature ­dishes from their places of origin.

Among the cities participating are Accra, Bulawayo, Guangzhou, Kigali, ­Lagos, Le Port and Maputo.

» Arts or Heritage Bus
Hop onto the Arts or Heritage Bus this month.

This innovative service offers sightseers the chance to see all the art or ­cultural hotspots in the city in a day.

The arts bus visits a selection of the city’s galleries on September 18.

Places that form part of the city’s heritage will be ­visited on September 11 and 25.

The bus services are free, but booking is essential.

» Mahatma Gandhi award and Satyagraha award
Another worthwhile event this week is the Mahatma Gandhi award and Satyagraha award evening at the City Hall on September 9.

The Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Peace and Reconciliation 2010 will be given to Dr Enuga S Reddy in recognition of his tremendous contribution at the United Nations in building international solidarity against apartheid.

It is also given in recognition of the contribution made by the government of India in support of the liberation struggle.

Other recipients include Chief Albert Luthuli, Ahmed Kathrada, Ruth First and Fatima Meer.

» Newlands East Community Hall spa treatment for the elderly
The elderly will be treated to a day of pampering at the ­Newlands East Community Hall on September 10.

There’ll be makeovers and hair styling for the ladies, and a barber for the gents.

Various spa treatments and health talks are also on the cards for the day.

Entrance is free and pensioners who live in the area are invited to sit back and relax.

» Indian Ocean Blue Lagoon Festival
Saturday September 11 will see the start of the Indian Ocean Blue Lagoon Festival.
The festival includes a music concert and comedy show.

The music show embraces all genres including Indian traditional, modern, folk, kwaito, bhangra and pantsula.
Pranesh Maharaj and Senzo Mthethwa will take to the stage to provide the day’s comic relief.

Entry is free and there will also be plenty of food, craft and clothing for the shoppers in the crowd.
