Explore the spirit of film

2010-07-19 12:19

Last year 10 000 people turned out for the Faith Film Festival. This year the organisers are hoping to beat that, and topping the bill of five films on offer is Letters to God.

The film is about a terminally ill child who changes lives with his letters to God. The film, which was made for a mere $3.5 million (R26.6 million), recouped a third of that in its opening weekend in America. After headlining the festival, Letters to God opens on the movie circuit on July 30.

The other films are Mama I Want to Sing, Oh My God, The Mighty Macs and The Way Home. Mama I Want to Sing is about a girl who begins singing in the church choir and goes on to become a famous pop start. The film is written and directed by Charles Randolph-Wright who previously starred in Falcon Crest in the last 1980s.

Oh My God is a fascinating documentary in which filmmaker Peter Rodger travelled to 23 countries to ask a broad spectrum of people what God means to them personally.

Ellen Burnstyn and Carla Gucino star in The Mighty Macs, a sport-as-a-metaphor-for-life drama set in the 1970s. It marks Tim Chambers’ directorial debut and is in the tradition of Coach Carter, but with a religious slant.

The Way Home centres around a rural community’s frantic search for a family’s two-year-old who goes missing. Dean Cain, who you might remember way back as Clark Kent in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman opposite Teri Hatcher, stars.

The festival is part of Nu Metro’s Inspires selection of films, which brings faith-based films to South Africa.

The Faith Film Festival runs at Nu Metro theatres across the country from July 23 to July 29.
