Explosion rocks Libyan town of Brega

2011-03-02 14:52

A loud explosion today rocked the Libyan town of Brega, where regime loyalists are clashing with opposition rebels and witnesses afterwards saw a fighter jet streak through the sky.

The explosion was heard near the university, one of several locations in the city where rebel fighters said loyalists of Mummar Gaddafi were holed up and where a plume of smoke rose into the sky, an AFP reporter said.

Opposition rebels said they were surrounding regime fighters who were in the university area and at the gates of the Sirte oil company. Plumes of smoke from shell fire and heavy machine gun fire rattled through Brega, the reporter said.

“Now they’re limited to the university and the gates of the oil company.

Their ammunition is running out.

They’re firing randomly. We’ll take these positions by nightfall,” said one rebel fighter who gave his name as Mohammad.
