Energetic TV presenter Mpho Maboi is not afraid to chart new territory for women in sports.

She’s one of the few women to make a name for herself in the boys’ world of sports presenting.

Mpho Maboi, 33, a former presenter on SuperSport’s World of Sports, was the first woman to anchor a studio show on football on the channel. Now she’s addressing an even bigger audience, thanks to her SABC 1 show, SAFA TV.

The show aims to inform the public about the programmes the South African Football Association (SAFA) runs, fill viewers in on developments within the industry and explore the challenges the organisation faces, she explains.

Mpho grew up watching soccer with her dad, a die-hard Kaizer Chiefs fan. ‘I also played soccer with the boys in Daveyton and Benoni, where I grew up. But despite my strong Kaizer Chiefs background, I’ve managed to stay neutral in my support for teams, which works well for me in my job.’

Mpho’s interest in the beautiful game is wide. ‘I’m passionate about issues that surround soccer, such as the fact we don’t support our local teams and leagues, yet seats are always sold out for rugby and cricket.’

Mpho also aims to raise the profile of women’s soccer.

Despite her achievements, the busy mom to toddler Thato says she still has far to go.

‘I’m just getting started! I’d love to host the Premier Soccer League Awards and the SA Sports Awards, have a show on ESPN and, ultimately, a game in studio for the UEFA Champions League. I plan to continue working hard, growing my networks and putting my best foot forward in order to achieve my goals.’

• Safa tv is on Sabc 1 on Saturdays at 1:30pm.

My favourite city is ... ‘Cape Town. I just love the pace of the place.’

The authors I admire are … ‘Maya Angelou and Paulo Coelho, for their insight and use of metaphors.’

My signature style item is ... ‘Heels. They make me feel desirable and tall so I always wear them. Even if I’m rocking a soccer jersey, I’ll still have my heels on!’
