F1 film in the works

Formula One driver Niki Lauda is a legend and now he has a film being made about his interesting racing career.

Award-winning screenwriter Peter Morgan is working on a film about the former Austrian racer.

The British writer is focusing on the year 1976, in which Lauda almost lost his life in a crash at the German Grand Prix, suffering severe burns to his head when trapped in his burning Ferrari.

Lauda returned to the track only six weeks later, and narrowly lost the championship to his British rival James Hunt.

Although the project is still in an early stage, Lauda told public radio Oe3 he is already thinking about which actor could play him.

“Everyone who has had his right ear burnt off can already start making plans,” he said jokingly.

Lauda won three world titles: 1975, 1977 and 1984; with 25 race wins to his credit.

Peter Morgan received a Golden Globe Award and Academy Award nomination for his script for The Queen. His screenplay for Frost/Nixon was also nominated for an Oscar.

Morgan’s current project, 360, a modern version of Arthur Schnitzler’s erotic play La Ronde, is currently being filmed in Vienna with Jude Law.
