FF+ joins calls for toll fee protest

2011-05-17 11:02

The FF Plus today added its voice to calls for protests against Gauteng’s proposed toll fees.

“The Freedom Front Plus intends to increase its protest against high tollgate tariffs if the committee on tollgates does not lower the tariff to 5c a kilometre,” the party’s parliamentary spokesperson for transport Anton Alberts said.

“The party will be considering various actions such as referring the tariffs to the Consumer Commission and even organising public protest actions by road users.”

Alberts said the party had, in its submission to the government committee on tollgates in March, indicated this tariff was the most road users could afford.

Labour federation Cosatu yesterday threatened protests if its demands for talks about the toll fees were not met.

They were set at R0.66/km before a public outcry led to them being put on hold and a committee formed to reassess the pricing.

Alberts said it was a concern that the SA National Roads Agency Limited would not be making its report public before the local government election.

“It creates the impression that the tariffs will most probably not be reduced drastically. The committee should already in April have invited the parties who had made submissions to it, back for their inputs into the report. This did not happen.”

He said the party’s enquiries in this regard were also not answered. More than 130 000 signatures were currently on the FF Plus’s tollgate tariff petition.
