‘Face of SA football’ dies

2011-07-19 15:14

The South African football supporters association (Safsa) has expressed shock at the death of Orlando Pirates’ “number one supporter” Johannes Mofokeng.

Mofokeng (61) – popularly known as “Mzion” among football lovers – was admitted to the Chris Hani-Baragwanath hospital in Soweto last week because of complications related to low blood pressure.

Siyabulela Makunga, Safsa secretary, said Mzion died early this morning.

“We were extremely shocked by the news as we went to see Mzion yesterday and were assured he was stable and recovering.”

He said “Mzion” was a man of principle whose ideals included seeing supporters united and striving for transformation and development of football.

“He founded the association (Safsa), alongside prominent names in football – Nyawana, Saddam, Mguyo, Gladys Gailey and many more,” Makunga said.

South African Football Association’s (Safa) acting CEO, Pinky Lehoko, said the football family has lost a passionate and loyal member.

“Mzion was a charismatic fan and a loyal servant of the game. He loved his club Orlando Pirates. He was passionate about all our national teams and he was the face of South African football,” Lehoko said.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
