Family remains: it’s Mandela vs Mandela

2013-06-28 11:31

Seventeen members of the Mandela family have brought an urgent application at the Mthatha High Court against one of their own, Mandla Mandela.

They seek the return, to Qunu, of the family remains Mandla Mandela had moved from Qunu to Mvezo.

The remains of Mandla's father, Makgatho, and his siblings, Thembekile and Makaziwe, were allegedly dug up by Mandla in 2011 without consulting the rest of the Mandela family. He reburied them in Mvezo, where he is also a chief and where his grandfather was born.

Family lawyer Advocate Wesley Hayes, who also represents Mandla’s estranged wife, Mabhulu Mandela, in their divorce proceedings, confirmed the case to City Press at the high court.

“Yes, I have been instructed by the family to take action against Mandla,” he said.

Hayes did not want to get into the details of the application, but confirmed that Mandla, the premier’s office of the Eastern Cape, and the province’s MEC for Health were the respondents.

Hayes also confirmed that the applicants included Nelson Mandela's daughters, Makaziwe and Zenani, and grandchildren Ndileka and Ndaba.

“It’s a long list of the family bringing this application against these three respondents,” he said.
