Fantastic Fashion Week first round ends

2010-01-23 13:16

THE first round of South Africa’s five annual fashion weeks comes

to an end tonight.

With 17 shows featuring 19 collections, the Audi Joburg Fashion

Week’s autumn/winter collection has certainly been a good way to get into the

swing of the 2010 social calendar. The likes of Gerry and Kerry Elsdon,

Basetsana Khumalo, Katlego Danke, Bianca Le Grange, Uyanda Mbuli and former

model, Sonia Booth, have provided some nice eye candy on the front row at the

Sandton International Convention Centre over the past four days.

Fundudzi, by Craig Jacobs, drew a capacity crowd and some of the

more famous personalities in fashion, music and television. But it was the

creativity and unexpected drama during the show that had everyone gasping in

While the label has grown beyond stretch fabric and hoodies - and

even introduced some men’s wear this year - it was the use of multi-tasking

props that delighted the audience. Only someone with a vivid imagination can

turn a rug into a skirt, a lamp shade into an overlay and a picture in a frame

into a jacket. Fantastic stuff!

Last night, crowd favourite, David Tlale, unveiled his collection

at the chic Circa gallery in Rosebank in a stunning display of models used as

mannequins. The “art installation” had Tlale fans, fashionistas and the media in

super-awed mode.

Rich golds, intricate detailing and typical Tlale drama was the

order of the night as the designer went on an all-out futuristic glamorzon

onslaught. Very in, unapologetic and so now . . .
