Two South African labels pushing fresh new looks this summer have revealed their new designs. Grethe Koen loves what she’s seeing

Fruitylicious threads

We took a vote (the sample consisted of me, myself and I) and decided that all men need to wear fruit on their shirts from now on.

Thank you, you’re welcome. But just look at these tops! The geometric design is Afrocentric without being obvious, a fresh take on the tired “African print” trend.

It’s just the right amount of fun and style.

Unknown Union is designed and produced locally, and has been bringing out some insanely cool clothing. For this latest offering, it has collaborated with Cape Town illustrator, designer and artist Daniel Ting Chong.

His work – a perfect mix of childlike wonder and cutting edge design – translates perfectly to clothing.

A tip of the hat

Johannesburg-based hatmaker Simon and Mary has been around for almost 70 years – and for good reason.

The brand is timeless, sophisticated and always on trend. The latest collection of hats, which drops on November 1, would make hat enthusiast Pharrell Williams drool.

Consisting of Mountie and bowler styles in soft 100% wool felt and various colours, these head pieces add instant panache. A yellow Mountie is a must for spring.

And why not push the envelope? Mix it up with street and formal gear – and always be sure to tilt it.

As Frank Sinatra once said: “Cock your hat – angles are attitudes.”
