Fashion as a weapon: Che Guevara

2012-04-01 10:32

Here Malema wears the ANC version of a Cuban guayabera, the neatly cut, open-necked shirt.

By now the beret is standard wear, a symbol of his fight-back campaign which signals radicalism, youth and the
spirit of the Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara.

Malema’s politics are profoundly influenced by Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, a Bolivarian of the 21st century. Like Guevara, Chavez is also influenced by Simon Bolivar, the father of Latin American independence.

The nationalisation drive was cut from the cloth of Chavez’s policies and Malema has visited Venezuela.

Malema’s speeches are replete with the themes of colonialism and a nationalist struggle.

Unfortunately, this look, coupled with the sunglasses and berets, is often also favoured by post-colonial, tinpot soldiers in central and west Africa.
