On a rainy night in Joburg, 50 of GQ’s Best-Dressed Men of the Year 2013 were honoured. Style critics Lesley Mofokeng, Paledi Segapo and Nthato Mashishi put them to the test

Oh dear! The Abrahams didn’t get the memo again. Randall Abrahams and Ljuba van Rooyen kept it nice and warm, just right for the great outdoors. Pictures: Lucky Nxumalo/City Press

Paledi: Randall still resists being a style icon. Why must he always try so hard to look stylishly insignificant? And his partner looks like a disaster.

Nthato: Randall and his partner didn’t make an effort.

Lesley: Let’s just say this couple dropped in on their way to a camping trip. Epic fail.

Asanda Maku and Khuli Chana may have just come back from the mall.

Asanda Maku and Khuli Chana

Paledi: When I first saw Khuli, he made me uneasy. But what looked fashionably atrocious has proved to be a rebellious streak. He broke the fashion rules with that biker jacket, the slim-fitting jeans and those fabulous veldskoene. He’s a ground-breaker. Two nods to Asanda for the grunge-inspired look. It’s next year’s big trend.

Nthato: Could be better. I have issues with the execution. The leather jacket is ill-fitting. He tried to channel Johnny Depp. As for his partner, I have no words.

Lesley: For a nominee, Khuli left me uninspired. This look was way too casual.

Omnishambles! Ayanda Thabethe’s multiple wardrobe malfunction was cringeworthy, while the white stains on Andile Ncube’s black tie were curious.

Ayanda Thabethe and Andile Ncube

Paledi: Andile exudes ambition, confidence and immense power. But his risqué-looking lass shows off way too much of her weapons of mass seduction. Is she a streetwalker or a fashion disaster? Neither, actually. She is a feisty, high-fashion, deadly Bond girl.

Nthato: Everything about Andile is perfect. But, eish, his partner could have worn white shorts and double-sided tapes on the boobs just for the lift.

Lesley: My heart broke for pretty Ayanda because the Sellotape holding her boob to the jacket was clearly visible and her mini pants were too short to hide the elastic of her pantihose at the top. Ouch! This was not a good night out for her. Andile looks dashing, but stained ties are a no-no.

Boity Thulo’s Janelle Monae-look may be dated, but she was a picture of sophistication however GB Collective needs to learn to empty his pockets.

Boitumelo Thulo and GB Collective

Paledi: Boity’s hair! It’s Janelle Monáe meets Beyoncé. She ticks all the boxes. Her partner wins, but that pocket square is way off.

Nthato: I love that Boity borrowed from the boys and her hot body is the cherry on top.

Lesley: This look has been done before, so it wasn’t fresh or different, but her sparkling personality gave it life. Collective needs to invest in a man-bag. The bulges are unsightly.

Danny K and Lisa Koppel played it too safe, too boring.

Paledi: Danny looks exquisite. I love how this couple went minimalistic. I’m in love with Lisa’s little black number and the tissue-weight mesh fabric strategically covered the bust area and sleeves.

Nthato: Danny and wife played it safe and it paid off. They remind me of Bond and his leading lady.

Lesley: They look good together, but too safe and boring.

Zuraida Jardine should keep this look for a naughty night in the bedroom

Zuraida Jardine

Paledi: What can I say. Zuraida gives an Amish transvestite a run for his money. Is this look a contingency plan gone awfully wrong?

Nthato: She always brings it, only this time she brought a look more suited to an afternoon with the girls at the mall.

Lesley: Zuraida was clearly having an off day. The boots, the mini dungaree, the vest. It possibly works better as a naughty costume – if at all.

Chad Saaiman looks underwhelming and missable

Chad Saaiman

Paledi: Best-dressed man title goes to the dandy Chad. I love that he merged the old look with a modern feel. There is no denying the clothes and cut fit him impeccably.

Nthato: Cool look, but not for the awards. Hire a reputable stylist for execution and attention to detail.

Lesley: Underwhelming.

Cleo Rinkwest and Lehasa Moloi looking like a retired Chippendale

Chloe Rinkwest and Lehasa Moloi

Paledi: This looks like a buffed Joe Soap after a work-out at the gym. The look is dull yet sexy, but inappropriate for the event.

Nthato: Wow! Man cleavage is inappropriate for the GQ awards. Fire your stylist for switching your outfits.

Lesley: The problem here is that Lehasa shows too much chest. It wasn’t that kind of a party. Plus, it was a rainy and cold night in Joburg. A shirt and tie would have worked just fine.

Phew! Looks like Chiano Sky survived the savage attack at the zoo

Chiano Sky

Paledi: This is nothing but a big hot mess. The floor-length frock made of T-shirting fabric with intentional holes calls for an immediate red carpet ban.

Nthato: This dress is fierce. She is a rock star and the look is age appropriate and fashion-forward. I just wish she wore a ponytail. Her flawless make-up complements the look.

Lesley: This bullet-hole dress is simply trashy. What happened here? Was she caught in this week’s M1 highway shooting drama while she walked to Emoyeni?

Lerato Kganyago’s dress and the creasing material cheapened her look

Lerato Kganyago

Paledi: I like the emphasis on the shoulder line, and the Naomi Campbell-inspired hair and the minimal accessories, but the dress should be tightly fitted. Bandage dresses are all about emphasis around the right body parts and Lerato certainly fits the description.

Nthato: This is a nice outfit, but not for this occasion. This is Lerato’s month. She’s on the cover of True Love and all she should be celebrating is her hot body.

Lesley: If only the dress didn’t crease. However, it’s playful and fun, and still classy.

Lungile Radu’s hottest accessory is the grey he proudly flaunts on his head

Lungile Radu

Paledi: Three things that make a man’s look: cloth, cut and fit. The cut and fit could have been better, and the tie length abnormally elongates his torso.

Nthato: Lungsta knows what works, but he could have matched with dark navy blue shoes.

Lesley: Lungile’s biggest accessory was his new natural grey hair.

Lunga Shabalala’s ill fitting top disturbs an otherwise progressive fashionable look

Lunga Shabalala

Paledi: I love this black-and-white ensemble and the fabulous twist to it. The almost Versace-inspired print looks dapper. I feel the sleeves are slightly ill-fitting, making this resemble a borrowed look.

Nthato: I love that Lunga is a risk-taker and always has fun with fashion. This is fashion-forward and age appropriate.

Lesley: He was the most progressive on the night and a winner. Now, if only the sleeves of the jacket fitted properly. Having said that, he was great overall.
