Federer passes Sampras for record time at no. 1

2012-07-16 12:14

Berlin – Freshly crowned Wimbledon champion Roger Federer started a record 287th week as world number one tennis player in the latest rankings issued by the ATP.

The Swiss Federer returned to the top a week ago after equalling Pete Sampras’ seven Wimbledon titles.

He has now dethroned the American as the longest-serving number in the sport, with Sampras accumulating 286 weeks at the top during his career.

The ATP dedicated a special tribute page on their website to Federer, who became number one for the first time in February 2004.

“I never stopped believing ... It all worked out,” Federer said ahead of the record week.

“I got great momentum, great confidence, and it all came together.

“It’s a magical moment for me. I was so close to the record two years ago, and it is really amazing to be number one again. I played and won a lot of tournaments since the US Open last year. I’m happy that all the hard work I have been putting in has paid off.”

Federer tops the standings with 11.075 points ahead of former top-ranked players Novak Djokovic (11.000) and Rafael Nadal (8.905).

There were no changes in the top 10.
