Nandi Mngoma’s love affair with roller coasters and Ferris wheels started when she was about eight years old.

‘I remember so clearly that my sister Langa and brother Thabo and I were so excited about our big family road trip from Durban to Joburg,’ she says. ‘Gold Reef City was part of the itinerary.

We’d been anticipating the visit for ages and we were not disappointed.’

This was just one of many subsequent family holidays, and Nandi says that over time she began to realise just how much effort her parents put into creating a great childhood for their kids.

‘My parents were very big on us doing stuff together as a family,’ she says.

‘We were exposed to a lot of fun and adventurous things and I’m grateful that I have those childhood memories – they mean so much to me.’

Even though she’s no longer a kid, Nandi’s love for amusement parks remains. ‘Is there anyone who doesn’t like them?’ she asks.

‘As an adult, I love the fact that fairground rides give everyone a chance to let go of their stress and enjoy themselves.’

Nandi adds that her love for roller coasters has peaked since cutting her locks.

‘Before, I used to worry about what was happening to my hair instead of fully enjoying the roller coasters.

Now I’m always the girl who wants to ride again and again,’ she laughs.

Her debut album, Nandi, has received great reviews.

‘I was very happy to find that discerning music lovers enjoyed what I have to offer,’ she says, adding that she wants to move into media and fashion too.
