Fiercely contested Samas set to light up Sun City

2013-03-20 14:25

The stage is set for what should be one of the most brutally contested  in a long time.

In one corner are heavy weights like Desmond & The Tutus, Arno Carstens, Prime Circle, Kabelo, Rebecca and Black Coffee facing off to pop culture favourites Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Pascal & Pearce, L’Vovo Derrango and Zebra & Giraffe.

Relative crowding in another corner include the eclectic Toya Delazy, harmonious The Muffinz, sex kitten ChianoSky, SA Idols champion Khaya, talented BlackByrd and the interestingly named iScream & The Chocolate Stix ... Talk about a butt-kicking mixed bag of goodies that shows off the best of SA talent in every genre of music.

And judging by the staggering variety of music on the Samas list, indie labels and independent titles are finally playing in the same sandbox as the big record companies.

Ferocious competition for the hotly contested Album of the Year category will be between comeback diva Kelly Khumalo, crowd-pleasing rapper Khuli Chana, newbie Maleh, golden-voiced Ntokozo Mbambo and the adored The Muffinz.

The revamped BlackByrd will slug it out with Desmond & The Tutus, DJ Vetkuk Vs Mahoota, Freshlyground and The Muffinz for the Duo or Group of the Year award.

The Female Artist of the Year category is a beautiful revelation with unexpected and exciting names - ChianoSky, Kelly Khumalo, Lulu Dikana, Maleh and Ntokozo Mbambo; while the Male Artist of the Year is a rap vs rock fight between Arno Carstens, Elvis Blue, Khuli Chana, ProVerb and Reason.

Speaking at the launch where MTN celebrated its 10th year as the headline sponsor of the Samas, the mobile network’s chief marketing officer Serame Taukobong called the awards “the epitome of the South African music industry calendar”.

“We remain committed to supporting the development and growth of our music industry, which continues to flourish both locally and in the international arena thanks to the hard work done by the musicians, bands, producers, managers and technician,” he said.

Samas CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi said: “We have some of the most exciting categories in years and this tells me that the 19th annual Samas at the Sun City Superbowl are sure to leave an indelible mark on the face of SA music and we can not wait!”
