Final goodbyes to MaSisulu

2011-06-11 11:23

The funeral for liberation icon Albertina Sisulu has turned into a big celebration of her immense contribution to the country.

Mourners are bidding her farewell in song at Orlando stadium in Soweto. The ANC Women’s League has come out in full force.

“This nation is for women,” sang the jubilant crowds celebrating the life of one of SA’s foremost struggle heroines.

In a message from former president Nelson Mandela, the revered statesman said the death of Walter Sisulu was Albertina’s saddest loss.

“You are much more than a comrade to me, you and (Walter) Sisulu are my being,” read the message from Madiba.

After the message from Madiba, the crowds erupted into song extolling the incomparable virtues of Tata.

The official funeral of Albertina is a high-profile affair. President Jacob Zuma, his deputy, Kgalema Motlanthe, Zimbabwe’s prime minister, Morgan Tsvangirai, and other prominent figures attended.

The family and mourners are now leaving for the Newclare cemetery where MaSisulu will be laid to rest next to her husband.
The police officials have cordoned off Commando Road leading to the cemetery.

There is so much anticipation as the word goes around that the convoy of cars is on its way to the cemetery.

Onlookers are also excited at the prospect of seeing some of the country’s top politicians paying their last respect to the Mother of the Nation.
