Finance chief charged with misconduct

2010-11-08 15:04

The finance boss in the office of North West Premier Maureen Modiselle is facing charges of gross misconduct for alleged corruption, the provincial government said today.

Phillip Gumede faces eight charges relating to his alleged authorising of “irregular and wasteful” spending in the office of the premier dating back to May last year, said provincial spokesperson, Matshube Mfoloe.

The amounts were estimated “to run into hundreds of thousands of rands or possibly millions of rands”.

Gumede would face an independent disciplinary enquiry on Friday in Mafikeng.

He was suspended in September, with full benefits, to allow for an investigation into alleged breaches of government protocol in Modiselle’s office.

In September, North West public works CFO Kweku Odame-Takyi was sacked after he was found guilty of 12 charges of gross misconduct.

Modiselle’s office was among the six North West departments who received qualified reports from the auditor general in the 2009-2010 period.
