The now-unbanned film Of Good Report has released its poster design.

Working against the clock, the design team at Breinstorm Brand Architects in Joburg had just two days to meet the deadlines for the film’s sudden cinema release.

The sugar-daddy story that was condemned as “child pornography” by the state censors – before being rated 16SNVL on appeal – will premiere in Cape Town tomorrow and Joburg on Saturday.

Breinstorm offered to design the posters for free in solidarity with Jahmil XT Qubeka’s fight for freedom of expression.

The director only briefed them late on Tuesday.

“He asked us to reference the film noir posters of the 60s,” says Breinstorm’s Eben Keun.

“We looked at the original Lolita posters. We decided to use the theme of innocence lost and foreground Nolitha, the female character.”

Qubeka’s film consciously references noir and is shot in black and white.

“Back then, film posters were illustrated and silkscreened,” says Keun. “So we are having these silkscreened as well. That way each one will be an individual artwork.”

Qubeka was overjoyed with the new design, saying: “I want to use them both. The first one with the girl’s shoes makes most commercial sense but the second one is conceptually brilliant. They will both be hanging on my wall.”

Of Good Report opens across the country on August 9. City Press is the film’s media partner.
