Five arrested for stolen copper

2011-02-25 13:06

Five people have been arrested in possesion of almost a ton of stolen copper, Western Cape police said today.

The four men and one women – aged between 24 and 33 – were caught when police were tipped off about suspicious activity at a house in Ravensmead, police spokesperson Neil Arendse said.

When police arrived at the scene late last night they found the five stripping copper cable in preparation for sale, he said.

Police then contacted the Copperheads (the specialised non-ferrous metal theft unit) for assistance.

The outer casing identified the cable as Spoornet property, and was lying in a large heap in front of the house, Arendse said.

The value of the recovered copper was close to R50 000.?
