Five arrested in R380m cocaine bust

2010-12-11 10:19

Five people were arrested and cocaine worth R380 million was seized in Knysna, Western Cape.

“This bust was a result of a well-planned sting operation by crime intelligence and Knysna South African Police Service after they received information from the public regarding illegal activities taking place near the Knysna Waterfront,” said Captain Malcolm Pojie.

He said police went to the premises where the five people lived near the waterfront yesterday.

“After being interrogated, the suspects accompanied the members of the SAPS to the boat where they discovered the 48 bags of bricked cocaine,” said Pojie.

“The boat was anchored adjacent to the flat the suspects were occupying at the time.”

The cocaine, as well as the boat, said to be worth R1.5 million, were confiscated.

Those arrested would appear in the Knysna Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

“The investigation will be conducted by the provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit, which is attached to the Hawks.”
