Five injured in Cape Town mall explosion

2013-11-09 16:19

Five people were injured when a can of cooking spray exploded in a restaurant at the Blue Route mall in Cape Town.

Four men and a woman were injured and taken to hospital, according to the city’s fire and rescue services.

The men were released and the woman was kept for further observation, spokesman Theo Layne said.

Layne said the explosion, which occurred at about 10.30am this morning, was caused when a can of Spray and Cook was left near the restaurant’s oven.

This was discovered through the mall’s closed circuit camera footage.

The cooking area of the restaurant was damaged and repairs were almost complete, Layne said. “They have repaired some of the damage already.”
