Floating slum and other Rebel Architecture in Riaan Hendricks doccie

2014-08-25 14:00

Makoko, the “floating slum” in Nigeria’s populous city of Lagos, is often in the news, frequently raided by visiting cameras and packaged as a curiosity.

Increasingly, though, the village built on water is being documented intelligently and is sparking innovation.

For example, authorities initially threatened to demolish Nigerian architect Kunlé Adeyemi’s floating school for Makoko, but it went on to win numerous international awards.

It’s a project at the heart of an episode of Al Jazeera’s new series, Rebel Architecture, directed by acclaimed South African film maker Riaan Hendricks.

The series focuses on architects working to improve society.

As the broadcaster says: “Adeyemi is pioneering floating buildings to solve the issues of flooding and land occupation that affect hundreds of thousands in African coastal cities.”

Hendricks made his name with a poignant and graphic documentary of Cape Flats gang life called The Devil’s Lair.

He won numerous awards around the world for his intimate domestic portrait of characters he grew up with. It’s good to see him spread his wings.

The doccie is screened daily. See aljazeera.com for details.
