Floyd Mayweather comes to town

2014-01-12 06:00

Floyd “Money” Mayweather will touch down at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday in a G5 private jet with a select few of his entourage – or, as they’re known, “The Money Team”.

The 36-year-old five-division boxing world champion’s bodyguards will come in a separate jet, as he is said to fear carrying too much weight in the cabin of the G5.

Mayweather and team will be conducting development boxing clinics in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Bloemfontein and East London for a week.

But it won’t all be hard work – the boxer, who is worth hundreds of millions of US dollars, is well known for his love of fashion and bling.

Popular legend has it that in the past, Mayweather has worn a pair of shoes just once and then abandoned them in hotel rooms.

He can afford it, too. Mayweather pocketed $85 million (R905?million) in 2012.

“The partnership between us and ‘The Money Team’ is about inspiring South Africa’s boxers, trainers and promoters to aim for the sky and take the world by storm,” Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula said in a press release this week.

Mayweather’s visit, according to Mbalula, is the culmination of a resolution taken at last year’s National Boxing Indaba and, it is hoped, will spark a much needed renaissance in South African boxing.

Mayweather will be in Bloemfontein and East London on Friday, in Soweto on Saturday and in Cape Town on Sunday.
