The world’s highest-paid athlete last year, Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr, has been invited to the SA Sports Awards scheduled for November 17, Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula has confirmed.

“We’ve invited Floyd and Usain Bolt and the response from Mayweather has been a positive and promising one,” said Mbalula.

“We’re finalising everything but Floyd has indicated that he wouldn’t just come to the country without doing development work.”

Mbalula added that the decision to invite the pay-per-view king was based on his excellence and influence in sports, which will, in turn, inspire many rising youngsters who look up to him.

Asked how much it would cost the department to bring Mayweather to our shores, Mbalula said: “There’s no money exchange involved, he’s just invited as a guest and he did express his interest since he’s never been on the African continent.

“It’s no boxing bout so I must categorically state that no money will be paid to Mayweather.”
