Food tip: Banish garlic breath

2014-07-11 10:00

Garlic, wonderful garlic. It makes everything taste delicious, but afterwards you’re stuck with breath that could take out a baby tiger.

The reason brushing your teeth and chewing gum doesn’t really help is that the garlic contains four major sulphur-containing compounds that move into your bloodstream after eaten and then out through your lungs and sweat glands.

Luckily, we sourced online experts to tell you how to counter this. You’re welcome!

.?Eat an apple

Fruits that brown when left to air contain an oxidating enzyme. This compound also sets off a chemical chain reaction that deodorises stinky sulphides.

.?Go for green tea

It’s loaded with plant chemicals known as polyphenols, which work through a similar mechanism to neutralise all four sulphide compounds.

.?Sip a little lemon juice

Acidic beverages with a pH below 3.6 destroy the enzyme alliinase, which activates when garlic is crushed and enhances the smelly sulphuric properties.

.?Pro tip

I am told that the ready-chopped garlic in a jar makes your breath much stinkier than using fresh garlic that you peel and chop yourself.
